Hello Beautiful Human,
It's Mental Health Awareness Month. Have you given it much thought?
I've been reflecting and it seems apparent to me that, the reason why mental health has historically been stigmatized is because we live in a society that looks at symptoms through the lens of individual failings.
Rather than seeing one's mental state as a natural result of systems and circumstances.
If we stopped blaming the individuals we would have to investigate how society is operating and hold the people behind the systems accountable to change.
It's easier to blame the "crazy person" than look at the society creating an increasing number of unwell folks.
Let's be honest, widespread environmental degradation, dehumanizations, and unlivable economic situations are clear reasons for depression and anxiety.
But instead, we have been convinced that mental health is a personal problem.
And so, individuals carry a stupid amount of shame, which completely drains one's energy and empowerment to create any sort of system change.
I am glad that Mental Health Awareness Month and many passionate humans continue to work to reduce the stigma around mental health issues.
We need to continue to reduce the stigma AND let's be very un-confused about how mental health is connected to the systems and society we live in.
I'm not saying our fate is inevitable due to our current situation, it's not.
I am saying we can stop layering on shame.
Instead let's powerfully care for our mental wellbeing as a form of resistance. Invest in our mental fitness.
It requires an individual intention AND an awareness of the impact of society.
It's both / and thinking.
With my clients I hold space to grieve the very real circumstances that could lead them into burnout, anxiety, & depression, AND help them find their empowerment to care for their wellbeing so that they can show up for the causes they care about.

My incredible client, Jenice Chewlin is offering her signature summer workshop: Summer of Joy.
So often we hold ourselves to unconscious expectations instead of intentionally and powerfully deciding and declaring what we want and need.
