The Fun - Issue 103 Leadership Inside Out

I have a very important message: If you care deeply about making an impact on the serious issues facing our world... you are allowed to HAVE MORE FUN.

Brain science shows that bringing whimsy into your life will help you level up your leadership. Incorporating fun improves problem-solving, creativity, immune health, and longevity — seriously.

Although I always believed I’m allowed to have fun in general, in the past, my inner critic and perfectionism would crash the party with unhelpful thoughts and anxiety, making work heavy and exhausting.

By addressing that inner critic and anxiety I've been able to open the door to experiencing FUN in work.

Here are five ways that practicing mental fitness and embracing ease helped me fuel up on fun this past week:

  • I started to feel nervous as I rushed to the airport for a work trip, but I became aware of my body sensations and focused my mind on why I was excited and grateful and I was able to enjoy the ride.
  • When a friend mentioned how low-energy the opening session was, I decided to make my idea of playing Bad Bunny in my session a reality — even though I wasn’t sure how it would go, I did it anyway. The audience had a blast. I had a blast. It was probably one of the best presentations I’ve given yet.
  • I reconnected with people I hadn’t seen in over a year. My younger, critical self might have over-thought the interaction or worried that I hadn’t “cultivated” the relationships like a "good networker", believing my presence wasn't enough. Instead, I experienced genuine connection with old and new friends.
  • I allowed myself to sit in the sun instead of forcing myself to attend every session. A friend sent me the PowerPoint from one I missed, and I’m looking forward to following up with the presenter — No guilt. Yes vitamin D.
  • I ended the weekend with a magical visit to the Atlanta Botanical Garden with a client. It was the perfect setting to coach her on operating her business (en)joy in 2026.

The world may feel heavy and threatening, but please make time for fun.

If you are second guessing whether you should play music before that board meeting, turn your 1:1's into a walk and talk, or treat yourself to an afternoon of whimsy, remember that “add more fun” is a strategic leadership development goal.

It's the holistic approach to development that will keep your brain in peak performance and your energy high for engaging the meaningful work you do.

Having Fun,
